More desktop, familiar height
3440 × 1440 adds 880 horizontal pixels compared with 2560 × 1440. It is commonly described as 21:9 ultrawide, although the exact ratio is slightly wider than 21:9. Wallpaper matching is best done using the full resolution.
A native-size source has about 4.95 million pixels. A clean image at that size can cover the desktop without enlargement, provided its composition already suits the screen.
How a 16:9 image fits this screen
Consider a 3840 × 2160 source. To cover the display proportionally, it can be cropped to approximately 3840 × 1607 and then scaled down to 3440 × 1440. That removes roughly 26% of the original source height.
There is enough pixel detail in that example, but the crop still matters. Check what is lost above and below the subject. Using a 2560 × 1440 image instead requires enlargement as well as cropping, which can make softness more visible.
What to look for in a source
- A 3440 × 1440 image, or a larger image with a similar ratio, gives a straightforward fit.
- A broad composition with space around the subject gives the crop room to work.
- Fine detail should survive at desktop size; inspect compressed or visibly soft sources carefully.
- Check the parts of the image behind your icons and working windows.
There is no requirement to choose only landscapes. Wide abstracts, architectural scenes and personal photographs can work when their composition suits the frame.
