Individual wallpapers or one spanning image?
Per-display wallpaper treats each monitor as its own canvas. This is useful when you mix landscape and portrait screens, want different subjects, or have monitors with very different proportions. Each image can be chosen to suit the display it appears on.
A spanning wallpaper treats multiple displays as a combined area. It works especially well when a continuous scene can cross the boundary between screens. Keep a main subject away from a bezel, where part of the scene is visually interrupted.
Start with the Windows display arrangement
Open Windows Settings → System → Display and check that the numbered rectangles reflect the way your monitors sit on the desk. Their relative placement matters for a continuous image: a screen positioned above another creates a different target from two screens placed side by side.
Two 2560 × 1440 screens aligned horizontally form a 5120 × 1440 pixel canvas. Two 1920 × 1080 screens form 3840 × 1080. Both examples have a 32:9 shape. Stacking screens vertically produces a much taller composition instead.
Different resolutions need more care
For mixed resolutions, adding widths is only a useful shortcut when the displays are arranged horizontally; you must still account for their heights and vertical offsets. Unused areas in the bounding rectangle do not appear on a physical display.
Equal pixel heights do not guarantee equal physical heights. Display size and pixel density can make a line look discontinuous across the bezel even when the pixel arrangement is correct. Per-display wallpapers are a useful alternative when visual continuity is difficult.
Choose images around the layout
- For a span, choose a source close to the combined canvas shape.
- Allow extra space where a crop or a gap between screens could hide the subject.
- For mixed orientations, try separate images that share a color palette.
- Revisit your wallpaper target after adding, moving or rotating a monitor.
