Start with pixels, then choose the picture
Before choosing a wallpaper, check your display resolution in Windows Settings under System → Display. Select the monitor you want to change and note its pixel dimensions. The ratio between width and height tells you how wide a source image needs to be.
A 3440 × 1440 monitor belongs to the familiar 21:9 ultrawide family. A 5120 × 1440 monitor is 32:9: the same pixel height, with a much wider canvas. These displays need different compositions even when both images have enough pixels.
Why a large image can still fit badly
Resolution measures detail; aspect ratio describes shape. A high-resolution 16:9 picture can be sharp but still lose important content when filling an ultrawide screen. Fitting it proportionally requires cropping; stretching it to fit changes the shapes of people, buildings and scenery.
Look for an image with room around its subject and a horizon that remains comfortable after cropping. Panoramas often work well because the scene carries interest across the width. A close portrait can be harder to fit without losing the top or bottom.
